My Pavilion DV6 6C35DX needs a new HDD and want to know what SATA level it will support since most new HDD are at SATA 6. Nothing in the SPECS and only shows the current HDD as SATA 3. Thanks for anyones input on this.

Hi,
A normal notebook hard drive with sata III interface will not reach the speed of the Sata Il interface (3Gb/s), so it will make no difference to the speed of hard drive. The problem arrises when you want to put a drive with faster speeds than the interface such as an SSD which writes at about 500MB (4Gb/s) and will be bottlenecked to the slower speed of the interface Sata Il (3Gb/s). However this is still much faster than any mechanical hard drive you could insert.
So you can insert any sata III hard drive and you will see no difference to the speed of the drive or an SSD which will be much faster.
Hope it helps,
David

Hi:
I have zipped up and attached a free utility that will show the sata speed of the hard drive and the controller, below.
Run the utility. Close out of the summary window.
On the left side of the window, select the Drives category.
Click to expand the SATA/ATAPI section and then click on your notebook's hard drive.
The first line shows the hard drive speed and the drive controller speed.
Such as Serial ATA 6 GB/S @ 3 GB/S or Serial ATA 6 GB/S @ 6 GB/S.

Hi,
Your sata interface is sata II (3 Gigabit/s) on the PC. Nearly all newer hard disks are sata III (6 Gigabit/s) and will also work on sata II but up to max speed of the sata II interface on your PC. So you can choose any hard drive that fits in your notebook.
If you install an ssd it will also improve the overall speed of your system.
Hope it helps,
David

You're very welcome.
I am not familiar with the SATA speeds of the AMD chipsets, which is why I attached the little utility.
The equivalent dv6-6cxx Intel based model's drive controller are SATA III (6.0 GBPS).

The cost of a new HDD is better than a new Laptop. SO living with the slower SATA 2 is ok. I will be getting an HDD that has twice the CACHE. 16MB vs 8MB so that is a definate improvement as well as getting a WD Black drive. Thanks to all for the help.
