Same problem with my HP dv6000 ... lights blink then shut off. Escape button trick does turn computer on but no video. It all started when i lost video and had to do a hard shutdown.  This laptop has run very hot since day one and likely what caused the solder to melt on the nvdia chipset and disconnect.

I contacted HP and of course they are quick to tell me i'm out of warranty and want $260 for a new mb. BS. They did however tell me Nvidia has settled a class action lawsuit regarding this issue and it looks like some HP users can get a replacement computer. Probably take a few more months to get this thing finalized but DON'T THROW YOUR HP PAPERWEIGHT IN THE TRASH JUST YET.

I find it beyond pathetic that with such an obvious flaw in their system that they still refuse to replace any of the affected systems.

I have a dv6700 (dv6824ca) that crashed way back in February, shortly after a friend who worked tech support for HP mentioned the faulty boards in the series. I checked the website for an extended warrenty, which of course HP did not offer, got a price check on a repair from a local store, and thought nothing more of it.

I NEVER want to deal with HP again, as they obviously have no concern for their customers or faulty products.

My HP DV6700 just died....no power and I called customer service and basically they told me tough luck, despite there being many other complaints.  I can tell you Apple wouldn't handle it this way.  He told me his hands were tied, and I told him my wallet will be tied...no more HP.

Well mine just did the same thing.  Dv6815, model to be exact.  I contacted HP and they said "We have been getting a lot of calls about this issue" but that was that.  No recall as of yet.  But there should be, how else can you explain that everyone is experiencing the same problem at the same time.  EVERYONE SHOULD CONTACT HP BY MAIL OR EMAIL:(just called hp again,  they DO NOT HAVE AN EMAIL FOR REPORTING ISSUES!  You Must call into HP and complain. If enough complaints are filed then HP "will look into the issue" yeah right.  This is a copy of my letter, feel free to copy and paste it and make it your own.  Contact the United States Consumer Affairs and file a complaint in your state.

Subject: HP Pavilion dv6815 Notebook

1-5-2010

On August of 2008, I bought a HP Pavilion dv685nr Notebook, with serial number CNF850Z7D at Best Buy in Bellingham, Washington.

Unfortunately, your product has not performed well because my notebook just shutoff and will not turn back on.  I have tried a new battery, plugged the charger into the wall and connected that to my notebook, as well as trying a few quick fixes that HP customer service had me perform over the phone and still nothing.  The notebook will turn on for approximately two seconds and then turns off.   I am disappointed because I spent a lot of money on a notebook computer and this should not be happening.  I have read on the HP Forum  on this particular forum, 54 complaints have been written since the beginning of this year (2010).  Each complaint is the same. Their HP Pavilion just turned off and will only turn back on for a few seconds.  It is my belief as well as everyone else that has experienced this issue, that the problem is a defect with this model.   This speculation is based on the fact that this problem just now started after two years.  It seems that everyone with this model is experiencing the same problem at the same time.  There is no other explanation than a defect with the HP Pavilion models.   I have contacted HP help center on November, 5th 2010.  I told customer service of this issue, and he stated “I know, we are having quite a few calls about this issue” but he told me that there is currently nothing “they” can do about it.

To resolve the problem, I would appreciate a recall of this model and/or monetary compensation to cover the cost of the repair or at the very least compensation to extract my data on my HP pavilion laptop.

I look forward to your reply and a resolution to my problem and will wait until next Friday (November 12th, 2010) before seeking help from a consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau. Please contact me at the e-mail address or phone number below.

Sincerely,

Another 1 bites the dust.     And guess what folks the dv6700 is not included in the nvidia settlement.

I am having the same problem as well.  First windows crashed constantly, blue screen error.  Then a new version of the bios was downloaded.  Then the wireless card went out.  I was able to download an update and it worked for a day then it went out again.  Even the wireless assistant was gone so there was no trouble shooting from that stand point.  Then the laptop would beep randomly out of nowhere.  And finally after only 18 months it shut down randomly and kept trying to reboot automatically.  The lights would come on and the fan would start up for about 10 seconds then it would reboot. I purchased a new motherboard but did not seem to fix the issue.

Many thanks for posting this. Reflowing heat-cycle-stressed solder joints made some sense to me so I figured it was worth a try since the laptop was dead anyway. I followed the procedure for disassembly at:

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-hp-pavilion-dv6500-dv6600-dv6700-dv6800-notebooks/

Then used the link you provided for the motherboard reflow. It worked! May not last, but so far so good. Again, thanks for taking the time to post your solution. It saved me $100's.

To be clear, I'm responding to Jtom's post from 06_02_2010 concerning this link for motherboard reflow:
