pavilion g6-1206su
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everybody.

  • cpu: I3-2330m(2cores 4threads, 35W)
  • ram: 2x4Gb
  • BIOS Version: F.32 (07/28/2011)
  • System BIOS Version: 15.50
  • Mobo: 1670 /version: 09.36
  • socket 988B rPGA

The reason I decided to create this post was because I want to upgrade my laptop's cpu (have already upgraded to ssd and 2x4Gb ram). Usually when I have hardware problem I try to find the answers by myself but this time there is a lot of conflicting information on the web and I don't want to gamble purchasing parts that may not be compatible.

At the moment I am saving money but until that happens I need my laptop for university (visual basic, SSMS, OracleVM....).  I found other posts where people with g6 laptops have asked the same question but all of them had different models. Sooo the best cpu I hava came into conclusion is the I7-2620m (35W) which is also 2cores 4threads but I have seen people with the same cpu as mine upgrade to the 4core 8 threads (45W) cpus with success. My question is what the best cpu I can use is or is there a sure way of finding that out which is not just trial and error. Thanks in advance! It's my first post in a forum so excuse me if I did something wrong.

From time to time, there were many different models/products of g6 series therefore people can have few different options. The series of your machine supports 35W Processors. Please use page 88 (Intel processors only) of the  Maintenance and Service Guide on the following link

Thank you for your reply! So there is no actual 4 core cpu for this device at the end ?  One thing I was thinking about was if it's possible to make a CPU compatible by updating microcodes. In the end I will probably end up getting one of these CPUs listed in the manual but I wonder how some people were able to upgrade to the higher 45W CPUs from 35W one.

UPDATE:

I bought i5-2520m because I found it just for 15 euro and I watned to share my results if someone else decided to do the same. The benchmarks don't show that much of a difference but the notebook feels faster when browsing.

I3-2330m:

  • CPUZ Single Thread: 183
  • CPUZ Multy Thread: 490
  • Cinebench R15: 164

i5-2520m:

  • CPUZ Single Thread: 243
  • CPUZ Multy Thread: 724
  • Cinebench R15: 206

Still if someone has atempted to change the cpu of this laptop with 4 core 8 thread i7 it will be much appreciated to share the experience.
