Zbook G2 17"
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi, I'd like to upgrade my Zbook G2 17" adding an m.2 Pcie ssd, but before, as I've read that sometimes sata lines and pcie lines could be shared, I need to know if for my laptop is so and if adding an m.2 disk could disable one or more sata lines. Would I be able to use together Pcie disk with actual sata disks (slot 1 & 2 and optical drive slot) without problems? Or do I have to do something? Have I to apply tricks?

Many thanks

Luca

It does have a 2280 form factor M.2 slot. See about :30 into this video

However, it does not support PCie/NVME storage: SATA only will be compatible. Yes such an M.2 SSD will use one of the SATA lanes but the laptop is designed to have multiple storage devices, with 2 x 2.5 inch bays, an expansion bay and the M.2 slot any or all of which can hold a storage disk.

Service Manual

So something like the Samsung 860 Evo would be a good choice.

Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

Hello, thanks for reply but I have downloaded this service manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04775335 that is more actual than that you've posted. See on pages 27 and 46 between Solid-state-drive (11) and you can find 3 PCIe 2x2 ssd's as supported items. I've seen socket in my zbook G2 and it can only fit a 2260 m.2 (there's no space for a 2280 due to upper chip) as you can see in these pictures http://www.laptopultra.com/guide/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/HP-ZBook-17-G2-Disassembly-4.jpg http://www.laptopultra.com/guide/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/HP-ZBook-17-G2-Disassembly-5.jpg http://www.laptopultra.com/guide/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/HP-ZBook-17-G2-Disassembly-6.jpg. that show the same internal layout of my zbook.

I see an M mark on my m.2 socket and connector is like this  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#/media/File:M.2_connector_on_a_computer_motherboard.jpg

4 lines from right side and one dividing channel dot, and after (more or less) 30 lines other (sorry them are so little that I struggled to count them...:Glasses:

So seems may I have an updated Zbook G2 version that fits m.e PCIe disk instead of an msata one? What do you think about it? Let me know.

But if so my question is the same: adding an m.2 disk should disable one or more other sata lines?

Many thanks

Luca

The Manual does not show a clear full-on image of inside the access cover. I am not sure what the difference is in the two manuals I posted and I am not sure what computer is being shown in the youtube I sent you. I have the Zbook 15 G3 and it definitely takes PCIe/NVME M.2 SSDs, 2 of them in fact. However, the G2 is quite a bit older architecture...4th gen instead of 6th gen. It indeed looks like you can install an NVME x2 SSD. It will not take away a SATA lane if you do and I am not really sure what you are worried might happen even if it does.
