My battery has been slowly discharging over the last year, despite being plugged in. Specifically, if I unplug the laptop and let it discharge and then plug it in again, it will charge up to a maximum point, but no further - and this maximum charge has slowly been decreasing over time so that it now sits at 20%. It used to say "Plugged in, not charging"; now it just says "Plugged in".
Most of the guides online on how to deal with this require you to remove the battery, but my battery is not removable. I have tried most of the other suggestions out there, but they are fairly scattershot and varied, and nothing has worked.
Is there any updated advice on how to resolve this problem, for a 15.6" Pavilion Notebook (bought 3 years ago, if that helps narrow down the model)?
Many thanks.

This is the Manual:
(16) Battery 849909-855
Pages 29-32 show how to do the replacement.
If you want to try calibration do it from the pre-boot UEFI diagnostics not from Windows. Tap esc as you power up then F2 and enter diagnostics. Then power and select battery and it will give the option to calibrate, which takes 4 or 5 hours.
The simple results on the battery test are not worth much. We would need to see the advanced results which tells how many cycles the battery has left, how much power it can still hold, etc.

It does not really narrow down the model but if the laptop is 3 years old I can say with about 90% certainty you need to replace the battery. It can be replaced it just requires removal of the back cover. If you can be more specific about the model we can provide detailed replacement instructions and also link you to a place to buy a new battery. In order to rule out the 10% uncertainty you might want to run a full battery diagnostic test through HP Support Assistant (an app installed on your laptop from the factory). Even if the test says "OK" we want to drill down into the detailed information on the health of the battery.

Thanks. I've run the HP product identifier and it says my model is a Pavilion 15-au181sa.
Regarding the fact that it's 3 years old, I don't know if it makes a difference, but I should note that it originally started when it was about a year and a half old.
I've run the battery check on the HP Assistant and it's told me I need to calibrate the battery. I was under the impression I needed to be able to fully charge the battery to do that. Is that correct?

Manufacturer: 313-42-31
Battery age: N/A
Temperature: 19C
Design capacity: 5350 mAh
Full Charge capacity: 5344 mAh
Remaining capacity: 1104 mAh
Current: -86mA
Terminal voltage: 8470mV
design voltage: 7700mV
Cell Voltage 1: 4251mV
Cell voltage 2: 4219 mV
Cell voltage 3: 0mV
Cell voltage 4: 0mV
Status: C0

Do you foresee any problems trying to calibrate with only 20% battery?

Thanks for your help. I'm going to just go and buy a replacement battery.
I notice the battery you linked to on Amazon says compatibility with multiple Pavilion 15-au000 types, but doesn't include au151sa (my model). Is that likely to be a problem?
