HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ae0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I plug in my Cygnett 15,000MaH portable charger to my spectre x360 laptop via my USBC to USBA cable (capable of USB 2.0 connectivity of up to 480 Mbps and max 3A charging output.) I get this error message: "For full performance, connect a higher capacity power adapter".

How can I get around this? I know the portable charger can't charge the whole laptop, but I was expecting it could do a bit of charging.

Thanks for your help.

@070304,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post that you need assistance with the portable charger not charging on your HP notebook. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you tried to use a different compatible cable?

In USB protocol there are two 3 types of connectors -
Type A used for USB host. This is the port on majority of laptops available today. It's used to connect USB devices like memory sticks, mouse, keyboard and more. It also supplies power (e.g. 5 V, 500 mA max for USB 2.0) to connected devices. Type A port is never designed to receive power.

Type B: Also type B mini or micro which can commonly be seen on mobile phones, accept power (remember phone can be charged with USB). The power received can be used to power device or charge battery.

Type C: A latest standard in USB technology is reversible cable and can potentially be used to receive power and charge battery. So latest laptops with type C connector would support charging with (a very large) power bank. One will need to have Type C output on battery pack or a converter cable.

I have found a wonderful document which you can go through - HP PCs, Tablets and Accessories - Using USB Type-C to Transfer Power and Data

Please try with a different cable and check if that helps.

Alternatively,  I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest here is to update the Bios on your computer from  HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi, thanks so much for your help!

I have installed all possible software updates including BIOS updates from settings and HP support assistant.

I was not aware that different types of USB are suited to charging more than others.. however how should I go about using a different type of USB cable?

The portable charger has 3 slots. 1 is for the portable charger's charging cable only. The others  are two USB cables. My computer has 1 USB port and two thunderbolt / USB-C ports.

When I used my portable charger's charging cord to connect to my computer's USB-A port, the computer started charging the portable charger, rather than the other way around, and given that USB-A to USB-A cables seem to be rare I figured I must use the thunderbolt (which is predominantly used for charging) port of my computer to connect to the portable charger. Just by looking at the size of a USB-B type cable, I do not think this would fit in my portable charger's ports. So despite USB-A not generally being used for power/charge, what other options do I have in terms of connecting the portable charger to my laptop (other than USB-A to USB-C). What do you mean by using another adapter?

Thanks again!

Unfortunately, the Cygnett power adapter that you own is not up to the task. Using a gender changing cable will nothelp.

You will need a portable power adapter that is capable of directly connecting to the USB Type-C (Thunderbolt) connector on the Spectre notebook. One of the power requirements for the Spectre is that the power source be 65W. That is a pretty hefty requirement for a portable device.
