HP Envy 17. About 4 years old. Will not power on after screen is closed. When you open it, nothing happens. Power button does nothing. Started happening a month ago. Removed the battery. Plugged it in with the screen open, and somehow managed to turn it on. If I left the screen open, it stayed on. I could put it to sleep and wake it up as long as the screen is open. I shut it by accident yesterday and it won’t restart. Is there any combination of other buttons I can try to start it or any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi @huan588
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP Envy 17 is facing a hardware-related issue, potentially involving the laptop's lid sensor or power management system.
Since it’s not responding to the power button or standard startup procedures, here are some steps and suggestions that may help:
1. Try a Hard Reset
Disconnect the battery and unplug the laptop from all power sources.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power from the system.
Reconnect the battery and plug the charger back in. Try powering it on with the lid open.
2. Key Combination to Reset Power
Certain laptops respond to specific button combinations to reset or force startup:
Hold Windows Key + B and tap the Power Button for 1-2 seconds.
Release the power button while keeping Windows Key + B held. If this works, you may see the BIOS recovery screen, allowing you to troubleshoot further.
3. Disconnect Internal Lid Sensor
If the laptop powers on only with the lid open, the lid sensor might be malfunctioning and sending incorrect signals to the power system.
While this requires some technical expertise, a technician could disconnect or disable the lid sensor temporarily, allowing you to turn on the device regardless of lid position.
4. Boot Without the Battery
Since you previously managed to power it on without the battery:
Remove the battery completely and plug the laptop directly into the charger.
Try powering it on with the lid open. If successful, it suggests the battery or sensor might be contributing to the issue.
5. Test the Power Button Circuit
If the power button isn’t responding:
Try pressing Ctrl + Shift + Power to trigger startup (on certain models).
If this doesn’t work, the power button circuit may be faulty and require repair.
