Hey everyone,

I recently updated the BIOS on my HP OMEN 16 (xd0015AX) on the advice of HP Support. The update fixed my trackpad, but now my power button isn't functioning properly in Windows.

The Issue:

The power button hardware physically works (it turns the laptop ON from a complete shutdown and works for hard resets).

Problem: Pressing the power button for 1 second while Windows is running no longer puts the laptop to sleep. Also, it won't wake the laptop up from sleep mode.

What I’ve already tried:

Performed a hard EC power reset / CMOS reset.

Verified power options in Windows.

It seems like the BIOS update broke the ACPI / Sleep power states or Embedded Controller behavior. Has anyone else faced this power button sleep/wake issue after a BIOS update on HP OMEN laptops, and is there a setting fix or workaround for this besides rolling back the BIOS?

Thanks!

Run both the sleep study and the energy report and  see what if finds and what it recommends.

Post results here if you want.

Reference this document

If your laptop is not sleeping and your power plans are set properly then some device or application is preventing sleep. Windows uses Modern Standby and has two tools to analyze sleep problems that can occur in modern standby.

Energy ReportA list of possible problems ranked as Errors, Warnings, or Informational
Sleep StudyThe history of sleep going back several days

These report are obtained by using the Administrators command prompt.

Copy and paste the following 2 commands into the command prompt window for the energy report. There will be a default 60 second delay before the report is displayed.

powercfg /energy
.\energy-report.html

Note the number of errors and warnings.

Copy and paste the following 2 commands into the same window to get sleep history. Only the last 3 days will be examined unless you specify a duration on the command line.

powercfg /SleepStudy
.\SleepStudy-report.html

The last 3 days will be studies unless you specify a duration on the command line.
