Dear HP,

My power button doesn't want to put the laptop to sleep. I had this working before, but after windows update at some point the power button stopped doing it and the press do not give any result. Only the long press make force shut down, but the sleep function is not working. I have all set correctly in the power settings.

I will be happy if you can help me.

Thank you!

Hi @MM-Siena,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP laptop's power button is not putting the laptop to sleep after a Windows update,  I would request you to please follow the below steps to resolve the issue.

Verify Power Settings:

  • Access the Power Options:
  • Open the Control Panel and select 'Hardware and Sound' > 'Power Options'.
  • Check if the power button is configured correctly:
  • Click on 'Choose what the power buttons do' on the left panel.
  • Ensure that the option for 'When I press the power button' is set to 'Sleep' for both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'.

Update Power Plan Settings:

  • Sometimes updates can reset or corrupt your power plans. You can either reset to a default power plan or reconfigure it.
  • In the 'Power Options' window, see if you can either restore the 'default settings for this plan' or create a new power plan and configure it as desired.

Check for Additional Windows Updates:

  • Ensure all Windows updates have been fully installed, as a pending update might be causing conflicts.

Update System Drivers:

  • Specifically, update any drivers related to the system hardware, such as chipset and graphics drivers, which can affect power management features.
  • Visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers for your specific laptop model.

Run Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Use the built-in troubleshooter for power settings to identify and fix any Windows-related issues.
  • Go to 'Settings' > 'Update & Security' > 'Troubleshoot' > 'Additional troubleshooters' and select 'Power'.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop model on the HP Support website. BIOS updates can sometimes resolve power management issues.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Perform a hard reset which can sometimes resolve issues with power and startup problems:
  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect any external devices.
  • Remove the battery (if it's removable) and the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then power on the laptop.

Take care and have an amazing day!
