Hi @LawyerHurley

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you may be dealing with a faulty power cord or a potential issue with the printer’s power input port (where the power cord connects to the printer). If your printer doesn't always power on when plugged in and the power cord feels like it may have a short, that’s likely the source of the issue.

Here’s how you can troubleshoot the problem and determine whether it’s the power cord or the printer that has the issue:

1. Inspect the Power Cord

  • Look for visible damage: Check the entire length of the power cord for any visible cuts, fraying, or kinks. Pay close attention to the area near the plug where it connects to the printer, as that’s where cords often develop short circuits.
  • Feel for irregularities: Gently bend and flex the cord at different points and see if you feel any loose or damaged sections inside the cable (you might feel a "lump" or see the cord exposed).
  • Test the power cord on another device: If you have another compatible device (or even another printer that uses the same cord), try using the cord with that device to see if it works. If the second device doesn’t turn on, it's likely that the power cord is faulty.

2. Test with a Different Power Cord (if available)

  • If you have a compatible power cord (either from another printer or device), try using that cord to see if the printer powers on reliably.
  • Important: Make sure the replacement power cord is compatible with your HP Envy Pro 6455 in terms of voltage and current. This information is usually printed on the label near the plug end or on the printer’s power adapter.

3. Check the Power Input Port on the Printer

  • Examine the port where the power cord plugs into the printer. Look for any visible signs of damage such as bent pins, corrosion, or loose connections.
  • Wiggle the power connector gently while it’s plugged into the printer and see if the printer turns on or off intermittently. If the printer powers on or off as you move the connector, the power port on the printer could be loose or damaged.
  • If you notice any problems with the port, you might need professional repair, as the power input component could be faulty.

4. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Unplug the printer from the wall outlet.
  • Leave it unplugged for about 1-2 minutes to fully reset the internal power supply.
  • Plug the printer back in and try turning it on. If it doesn’t turn on immediately, try wiggling the power cord gently to see if the connection is loose.

5. Check the Printer’s Power Supply Unit (if external)

  • If your printer uses an external power adapter (as some printers do), make sure the adapter is functioning. Look for any blinking lights or signs of a malfunction.
  • If the adapter feels unusually warm or doesn’t seem to be working correctly, it might need to be replaced.

6. Try the Printer on a Different Outlet

  • If you haven’t already, plug the printer into a different power outlet. This ensures that the issue isn't with the power source or the electrical circuit. A faulty outlet can also cause intermittent power issues.

7. Replace the Power Cord or Adapter

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
