So for a little while my power cord had been a bit finicy, I would have to move the cord a bit sometimes for it to work. Today when I started my computer up I could not get it to supply power to my laptop. After a little while of messing around trying to get it to work I checked my computer and noticed that the battery still registered at 100%. I did have to unplug it at one point which reduced the power to 93%. After that it has stayed there. The computer does not acknowledge that it is plugged in and the battery has not charged. Hower, the cord has to be supplying power because the battery has not reduced while it is plugged in. Can someone tell me what the heck is going on and hopefully how to fix it without having to buy a new computer.

So I went to the Geek squad at my local best Buy for help. They did have spare cords that worked. I found out that is was in-fact the power cord, only outputting enough energy to just barely run the laptop with nothing left to charge the battery. I bought a new cord from them and it works fine. Thank you for the help.

Come on! It's been a day and a half already and 43 people have seen this. Someone must know what the heck is going on!

Hi @Generic_name,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I see from the post that you are having issues with the power cord on your HP laptop. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Does the PC charge only while holding the adapter?

Does the battery charges reduces to 93% immediately or does it take a good amount of time?

Have you tried with a different power cord?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

I would suggest you check if the battery drains immediately, I would suggest you go ahead and Uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft ACPI drivers from Device manager.

Unplug the charge and use the laptop until the battery drains to 15%.

Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager,

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

Also, Go through them all and let me know what you have determined is causing the issue.

The first document has the most relevant troubleshooting if your battery appears to be not charging.

Battery Does not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge

I would suggest please update the BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

Next thing, I would suggest here is there a bent or dent on the charging port. If the battery charges only while holding the AC adapter, I would suggest you try another compatible adapter and check how it goes.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

I think you are slightly misunderstanding my problem. With the adapter plugged in, the computer does not acknowledge it (Light next to power plug not on, computer enters power-save mode, and the battery icon on the bottom left of the screen doesn't have the plug icon next to it) The 93% charge isn't the battery draining, the computer was un-pluged for a few minutes reducing it to 93% battery however when plugged in the battery does not drain, it simply won't return to full charge. I have not tried with a different power cord because I do not own one. I do already have HP support assist installed on my computer. Also, it's not the battery not holding a charge (in the day and a half since I posted this it has only dropped another 2%) The problem is that the battery will not charge period. I will attempt a power reset on the laptop as soon as I finish this post and reply again once I am done.

Unfortunatly, the hard reset did not fix the problem. from what I can tell thee is no difference what so ever. I am considering buying a new power cord at Target or Best Buy to see if that is the problem, can you tell me what type of cord I should buy?

Hi @Generic_name,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As I understand you are planning to purchase a power cord and you would like to know which one to purchase. I'll be really glad to help you with this,

Could you please provide me with the exact model number of the PC, so that I can provide you with the correct part number for the adapter. (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...) http://hp.care/2bygf7l

If you wish, you could find that part number for your AC adapter from Maintenance and Service guide for your Product.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

I could no find the product number. It is possible that it has worn off what-ever label it was on. I can provide you with the product key, The part number on the battery (756478-541), or any number on the cord itself. However I am beginning to believe it might be the battery since when I removed the battery the computer remained on.

Hi @Generic_name,

Thanks for responding with the detailed information.

It is genuine pleasure to with you.

I read your previous post where you mention that when you unplug the charger the notebook was and the battery charge percentage dropped to 93% and the most recent post you mention that the computer remained on without the charger.
