Hello,

I’m having some trouble with my laptop. A few weeks ago I accidentally broke my touchscreen and after that it often seemed as if someone was clicking on my screen. That’s why I bought a new touchscreen but I’m still having the same problem. Sometimes the clicking suddenly starts and I need to restart my laptop. Do you have any idea, what might be causing the issue and how I can fix it?

Best regards, Jannik

Edit: The clicking starts random but only when I use my Touchscreen and not every time I use it. If I only navigate with my mouse I have no problems.

Hi @Jannik3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your laptop is experiencing phantom touches or ghost touch issues, which can happen even after replacing the touchscreen. Here’s what might be causing it and how to fix it:

Possible Causes

  1. Driver or Calibration Issues
    • Old or corrupted touchscreen drivers can misinterpret input.
  2. Residual Hardware Fault
    • Even with a new screen, the digitizer cable or connector might be loose or damaged.
  3. Environmental Factors
    • Static electricity, moisture, or pressure on the screen can trigger false touches.
  4. Software Conflicts
    • Background apps or touch-related services are interfering with input.

Steps to Fix It

1. Update or Reinstall Touchscreen Driver

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager → Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click HID-compliant touchscreenUninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop; Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
  • Alternatively, update the driver via HP Support Assistant | HP® Support.

2. Calibrate the Touchscreen

  • Go to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Tablet PC Settings.
  • Click Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input and follow the prompts.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc → F2.
  • Run the Touchscreen Test to check for hardware issues.

4. Check for Loose Connections

  • If you’re comfortable, ensure the digitizer cable is properly seated.
  • If not, consider having an HP technician inspect it.

5. Disable Touchscreen Temporarily (to confirm)

  • In Device Manager, right-click HID-compliant touchscreenDisable device.
  • If the ghost clicks stop, the issue is definitely touch-related.

6. Update BIOS and Windows

  • Use HP Support Assistant to update BIOS and firmware.
  • Install all pending Windows updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello @VikramTheGreat,

thank you for your quick reply. I’m so glad someone answered me, because I have no idea what could cause the ghost touch issue. Sadly, I still have problems with my touchscreen.

I have a few additional details that I forgot to mention before. The ghost touch issue is not a permanent problem I often can use my laptop only clicking on the screen for a long time. But sometimes the ghost touch issue suddenly begins. After a restart everything is alright again.

To your second tip: I found something interesting when I wanted to calibrate the touchscreen. I had some problems finding the place for the touchscreen calibration that’s why I looked it up in the internet. When I found the “Tablet PC Settings” I only had the opportunity to configurate my pen or touchscreen but not to calibrate it. I’ll send you a screenshot how the “Tablet PC Settings” are looking on my screen and how they are looking on the screen on the internet website.

To your fourth tip: Another thing is, that I replaced the touchscreen myself. I think the digitizer cable it properly seated because I opened my laptop a second time because of the ghost touch issue, unplugged and plugged the cable back in. But maybe I damaged some important connectors? Do you have any further ideas how I could prove that nothing is damaged?

To your fifth tip: I also disabled my touchscreen for some time and I had no problems with the ghost touch iusse. I’m very sure that the issue is touch related. I even waited until the ghost touch issue started and then disabled my touchscreen. The clicking stopped immediately.

And to you last tip. I always have the newest Windows-updates but I’ve never updated my BIOS and I’m afraid of destroying my laptop. I bought a big hard disk for a backup and then I’m going to do the BIOS update.

Thank you for your quick respond, I’m sorry I didn’t answer earlier.

Take care and have a nice day.

Best regards, Jannik

Hi Jannik,

Ghost touches (phantom clicking) after a screen replacement are often caused by a few specific hardware or calibration issues. Even with a new panel, if the digitizer isn't properly calibrated or if there’s electrical interference, the sensors can misfire.

Here are a few things you should try:

  1. Recalibrate the Touchscreen: Go to the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings and click 'Calibrate.' This resets the touch coordinates and often fixes random clicking.

  2. Check for Grounding Issues: Sometimes, if the internal cables aren't shielded or seated perfectly, the digitizer picks up static. Try using the laptop without the charger plugged in to see if the clicking stops (cheaper chargers often cause electrical noise).

  3. Firmware/Driver Refresh: Go to Device Manager, expand 'Human Interface Devices,' right-click 'HID-compliant touch screen,' and select 'Uninstall device.' Restart your laptop and Windows will automatically reinstall a clean driver.

If you’re still seeing issues, it might be a faulty replacement part. I was actually just looking at the latest stock for a different project on this laptop list: https://www.techlandbd.com/shop-laptop-computer/brand-laptops — you might want to compare your model's digitizer specs there to ensure you got the exact revision required for your build.

Good luck, hope this helps you fix it!

 Hello @Mafuz9501,

thank you very much for your answer. When I tried your first tip, I had the same problem as before because I don't have the button "Calibrate". When I go to "Tablet PC Settings", I can configure my pen or touch display with the button "Setup", but then I only get a white screen, and I'm supposed to click anywhere.  That's it. Do you mean this function or another one? Because on the web I also saw the button "Calibrate" underneath the button "Setup". Do you have any idea why I don't have the second button? I'll sent you a screenshot, maybe you can spot the problem?

I tried using the touch screen while my laptop was unplugged, and after a few minutes I once again had the ghost touch issue. And I also uninstalled the "HID-compliant touch screen" and restarted my laptop. But sadly, it didn't help.

Another thing I never really mentioned is that the ghost touch issue started on my old screen after I broke it. Maybe I didn't only destroy my screen but also some other hardware? I broke my screen because I put my laptop in my bag and forgot to put the laptop in the laptop bag beforehand. And because of the pressure in my school bag, the screen broke.

Thank you for your help. Have a nice day.
