HP Probook 450 G3
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a 128GB M2 SSD preinstalled in the main boot drive. I installed a  1TB 2.5" SATA HDD in the spare bay for storage.

I would like to increase the capacity of the M2 SSD main boot drive to 960GB or 1TB if possible but the manual says the maximum capacity of the M2 SSD slot is 256GB.

I wondered if there have been Bios updates to increase the workable capacity for the M2 SSD slot. I am running the original bios v. 01.06

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The capacity mentioned in the service manual is the capacity the notebook could have been bought with.

There is no limit to the capacity of the M2 drive you can use. So 1TB and even 2TB will work.

Hope it helps,

David

@kar999

You can use 500GB or 1TB M.2 SSD using Crucial MX500 series or Samsung 860EVO series. For example

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

So the manual is out of date now.

Presumably it would be better to update the bios first?

I just need to read up on how to clone the existing SSD boot drive onto the new one. I'm thinking I might be able to do it via the 2.5" SATA HDD that's in the  laptop as a storage drive maybe.

Hi,

I would perform a clean install with the latest edition of Windows 10. Here is a small guide.

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (before replacing drive), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Thanks. Just waiting for the new SSD drive to arrive.

New Crucial MX500 1TB drive installed with disk imaging using Macrium Reflect (free) Software. The Acronis software supplied by Crucial would only work with a crucial drive in situ which was physically impossible for me as I was replacing the M.2 SanDisk in the only M.2 slot

Resized the main partition of the new drive and everything went smoothly.

Thanks for the advice.
