Hi:

Chapter 1, page 2 of the service manual does not show that processor on the list of supported processors.

That article is out dated. I've already reviewed it. Based on all the info here https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/78940/intel-core-i74940mx-processor-extreme-edi... and https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7-4940MX%20Mobile%20Extreme%20Edition.html would suggest it is compatible. I would like someone from HP to confirm.

This is a peer to peer forum.

No one from HP is going to answer your question in an official capacity, and if someone who works for HP volunteers an answer, they will give you exactly the same answer I did.

If you look at the release notes for all of the BIOS updates on the support page (under W8.1), none of them add support for additional processors.

The only way you are going to find out if it will work, is to install one and see.

FWIW, you can also contact the HP executive team at the link below.

Thanks! Sounds like I will have to just put one in and just find out if it will work.

One other question, is the Intel Core i7-4940MX supported by windows 11?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

Microsoft drew the Intel processor cutoff at the 8th gen core processors, so no 4th gen core processor is going to meet the requirements.

Your notebook would also need to have a TPM 2.0 security device, which it doesn't, in order to meet another W11 requirement Microsoft threw at us.

However...there is always someone out there that has a workaround for just about anything...

Here is an easy way to upgrade any PC currently running on W10, to W11 if you want...

I would make a system image of your current W10 installation prior to updating to W11, so you can easily reinstall W10 in the future.  I used the free Macrium Reflect software to do that, under the Backup at Home section.

Along with the system image, make sure you create the bootable DVD or USB rescue drive you boot from to access the system image stored on your portable hard drive.

No registry changes needed.  No need to create installation media.  Just download the W11 ISO file, and the guy's zip file.

I used this procedure yesterday to do an in-place upgrade an old HP 6930p notebook made in 2010 to W11, and I was able to keep my old Office 2010 Starter program that came with the notebook when it had W7 on it, along with all of my other programs files and settings.

The notebook met none of the enhanced W11 hardware requirements.

That is the 9th unsupported W11 PC I have upgraded to W11, and not one of them have had any issues whatsoever.

They have all gotten all the Windows 11 updates released thus far.

I check those against a PC I have that is fully supported to run W11.

I can provide a list of the PC's I have upgraded to W11 if you want.

One was made in 2008.
