- I've got a HP ZBook G2 17" laptop that I'm trying to determine the processor(s) that I can upgrade it to. Currently my ZBook has a i7- 4710MQ 2.5Ghz CPU 47-W. According to the Maintenance & Service file I was able to download, there are 3 other processors that were offered for the ZBook G2 17". The i7-4810MQ 2.8 Ghz 47-W and the i7-4910MQ 2.9 Ghz 47-W "appear" to be direct replacements without a motherboard change. There is one additional processor, i7-4940MX 3.10 Ghz 57-W. Nowhere in any documentation can I find an answer to my questions,
- Are the 4810MQ & 4910MQ both drop-in replacements since appear to have the same power listed? (47-W)
- Does the 4940MX require a different motherboard because of its power listed? (57-W)
- Can anyone either point me to a document that shows what motherboards are compatible with which processors? I very particular about having documentation when ever I start working with hardware components. I've gotten burned in the past & it has cost me a lot of money so please excuse me being a little OCD on this. TYIA!

According to chapter 3 of the service manual, the only motherboard differences are for quad core and dual core processors and no Windows product key, a W8 standard product key and a W8 Pro product key.
The same can be said for the heat sinks. Two are listed...for quad core and for dual core.

According to this side-by-side comparison of the i7- 4710MQ & the i7-4940MX , the processors have the same sockets.
Intel® Product Specification Comparison
This user benchmarking site has reports of over 300 ZBook 17 G2 hardware configurations and some folks have installed the i7-4940MX.
That would be the only info I can provide.

Thank you for the detailed response. I guess my only major concern was that the 4940MX is listed as 57w and my current processor 4710MQ is listed as 47w. I was concerned that may cause trouble with the higher power needs/consumption. Any thoughts or concerns that I should have with that. Also, I've been out of the PC/laptop repair/upgrade loop for several years so most of my "go to places" for parts are no longer in business. Any sites that are particularly good or bad? You're very welcome.
I usually go to eBay for used but tested and working PC parts.
Since HP didn't offer a different heatsink for the 57W processor, I would have to say that all you need to do is to replace the processor and do a very good job cleaning the heat sink and contact surfaces where the heat sink makes contact and reapplying thermal pads/paste as applicable.
