Obviously, your M.2 slot supports SATA SSDs too.
EliteBook 840 G3 and higher generations support NVMe SSDs.
At this moment, I'm unable to download the service manual for your model, but you can do so later from this link.

PartSurfer indicates your notebook comes with a 512 GB M.2 NVMe SSD.
If you need more storage space, you can replace it with one with a larger capacity such as 1 TB, 2 TB or more.
Your M.2 slot is PCIe version 3.0 (gen 3). NVMe gen 4 SSDs will work but run at gen 3 speeds.
