I just spent over £1k on a HP ENVY Laptop 17-ae1xx. I'm very pleased with it so far, but how can I tell if Numlock is on? The button doesn't light and there is no bottom of screen indicator. Surely an advanced laptop like this can't be missing such a very basic thing?

Hi @SkylineUK,
Thank you for responding,
It's great to have you back 😉
I do understand your concern and as an alternate you could use on- screen keyboard which would help you in enabling and disabling the num lock key.
Try the steps recommended below to enable Number Lock using the On-Screen Keyboard:
-
Click Start, type on-screen in the search field, then select On-Screen Keyboard from the search results list.
-
When the On-Screen Keyboard displays, click Options.
-
In the Options window, select Turn on numeric keypad , then click the OK button to save the change.
-
The On-Screen Keyboard now displays a numeric keypad. Click NumLock to enable the numeric keypad on your HP Envy series notebook.
-
Close the On-Screen Keyboard
This permanently enables the Num Lock feature on your HP Envy computer. If you want to turn it off, open the On-Screen Keyboard and select the NumLock button again.

Hope this helps!

Hi @SkylineUK,
Thank you for posting on HP Forums,
The Flower_Bud is at your service.
I understand you are in need of support,
I'll be glad to help you out, however, for an accurate solution I will need more details:
Newer notebook are designed without the Num lock light. You could check the functionality by pressing Num lock key and then typing the number on your notebook.
You could turn on and off Num lock by pressing it for once.
For more information, refer to the User Guide (Page number 13).
Hope this answer's your query.

I spoke to telephone Technical Support. After a frustrating few minutes that was there conclusion, i.e that a ubiquitous feature on PCs and laptops for decades has been removed in favour of "type with the key pad and see if a number results, if not, press NumLock." Very bizarre.
I notice that my Envy gets HP software updates. I don't see why this cannot be incorporated into a future one, i.e. making an icon appear at the bottom right of the screen to indicate whether NumLock is on or off.
