My laptop (bought 2017 but still running ok) has 2 ram slots, one has 4GB and one is not used. I obviously want to upgrade my RAM, can I input an 8GB in the second slot (so to have 12GB total) or even go for a 16GB (for 20GB total) or can I only input another 4GB (so to have 8GB total)?
Thanks.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook:
Chapter 1, pages 1 & 2 have the memory upgrade information.
Most of the information for your notebook is on page 2.
Your notebook can support up to 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600 MHz memory.
A single 16 GB DDR3L-1600 MHz memory chip will not work.
I'd max it out to the 2 x 8 GB amount.

You're very welcome.
I guess I read chapter 1 of the manual and forgot to post it for you.

Hi Paul,
I bought G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB DDR3L-1600MHz (F3-1600C9D-16GRSL) 2 modulesX16GB, installed it and works fine!
Run Windows memory diagnostic and reported no issues.
Laptop handles tasks faster and smoother. (not becoming am overall better machine obviously...)
One question though: in my task manager, when checking my task manager for memory usage, it displays 800Mhz for 2 slots, I thought the speed was 1600Mhz? Am I getting something wrong?
Thanks again for your help/advice!

Hi:
Glad the memory you bought works fine.
If you look at the very bottom of page 2 of the service manual, you will find that in the notebooks with DDR3L-1600 memory, it only runs in single channel mode--even with two matching memory chips installed, so the 800 MHz speed is correct.
In the models with DDR4 memory, those run the memory in dual channel mode with two matching memory chips installed and then you would multiply the speed you see by two to get the dual channel speed.
