Microsoft Windows 11

Hello everyone,

I would like to know if the RAM of my Envy 17-cr0970nd can be upgraded? A simple question to search for only none of the RAM-suppliers seem to recognize my particular system, nor does the HP site itself. At least I really couldn't find it.

Does anybody know more about this matter?

Regards Jaap

You're very welcome.

Both the HP service manual and the specs from this link indicate that your notebook only supports DDR4-3200 memory.

HP Envy 17-cr0970nd (6P0E2EA) laptop - Hardware Info

DDR5 memory runs at a lower voltage, has a different number of contact pins and the slot in the memory board is cut in a different place than it is in DDR4 memory making it physically impossible to install a DDR5 memory chip in a DDR4 memory slot.

The Crucial memory specs for the model series indicates the notebook will support 2 x 32 GB of memory.

HP - Compaq Envy 17-cr0000 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

I do not recommend installing 2 x 32 GB of DDR4-3200 memory unless you run this command first to confirm that would be possible, since the service manual indicates that only 2 x 16 GB of memory is supported.

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

Hi:

Chapter 1 of the service manual for the 17-cr0xxx model series indicates the notebook can support up to 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory.

Thanks a lot Paul!

Further question: the Intel website claims different types of possible RAM configurations for the i7-1260P Processor including DDR5-4800. These can be found up to 32 GB per unit wich could combine to 64 GB RAM total.

Will this work as well?

Up to DDR4 3200 MT/s
Up to LPDDR5 5200 MT/s

OK, I checked the maximum capacity via the promt command and it said 64 GB (after calculation). And indeed I have DDR4. So I'll be looking for a 2x32GB DDR4 upgrade.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

I recommend this kit, since Crucial indicates it is compatible with your notebook:
