Hi @Tetross,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are looking for help with upgrading your Laptop.
Upgrading the RAM in your OMEN 17-an040ur laptop is a great way to boost its performance. Here’s what you need to know about upgrading the RAM in your machine:
1. Maximum RAM Capacity
The OMEN 17-an040ur can support up to 32 GB of RAM. This is due to the limitations of the motherboard and chipset in your laptop.
2. Type and Speed of RAM
- Type: Your laptop uses DDR4 RAM.
- Speed: Check the existing RAM’s speed to match the new modules. Typically, it’s advisable to use RAM with the same speed as the existing memory to ensure compatibility and stability.
3. How to Upgrade
Here are the general steps to upgrade your RAM:
Turn Off and Disconnect the Laptop:
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Disconnect it from any power sources and remove any connected peripherals.
Prepare Your Workspace:
- Work on a static-free surface.
- Consider using an anti-static wrist strap to prevent damaging your components with static electricity.
Access the RAM Slots:
- Turn the laptop upside down and locate the screws that hold the back panel in place. You may need a screwdriver to remove them.
- Carefully remove the back panel to access the internal components. Some laptops have a dedicated RAM compartment, while others might require removing the entire back panel.
Locate the RAM Slots:
- Identify the existing RAM modules. They are usually housed in a slot or two.
Install the New RAM:
- If you are adding RAM, insert the new RAM module into the available slot, making sure it’s firmly and evenly seated.
- If you are replacing existing RAM, gently release the old modules by pushing the clips on the sides of the RAM slots and remove them. Then, insert the new RAM modules in their place, again making sure they are securely seated.
Reassemble the Laptop:
- Put the back panel back in place and secure it with the screws you removed earlier.
- Reconnect any peripherals and power sources.
Check RAM Installation:
- Boot up your laptop and check if the new RAM is recognized. You can do this by going to the system information in your operating system:
- Windows: Right-click on the Start menu, select “System,” and look under the “System” section to see the installed RAM.
Additional Tips
- Compatibility: Ensure the new RAM is compatible with your laptop in terms of speed and type. Most RAM should work fine as long as it matches these criteria.
- Dual Channel: For optimal performance, if you’re installing two new sticks, try to match the size and speed with the existing RAM and place them in the correct slots to take advantage of dual-channel memory.
