RAM Upgrade for HP 15-af114AU Notebook

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade RAM for this model -

The max supported ram is 8GB (either 1x 8GB or 2x 4GB). The system already has 4gb, so is it better to add 1x 8gb or add 4gb? Would there be any compatibility issues?

The only difference I see among the modules you are asking about and the module you say did not work is the density. The number of black blocks on the side. The one that did not work is high density 4 blocks and the ones you ask about are 8. What is the factory-supplied module? You want to match that as much as possible. 

And I would add another 4 gig to make 8, not an 8 to make 12.

Thanks for replying. Someone suggested unless the RAM match exactly it may result in an unstable system, so I was wondering if I could remove the existing 4gb module & use just one 8GB, not 4gb + 8gb.

You are better off to have 2 x 4 because of dual channel, but yes you could go 1 x 8. It does not have to match exactly but has to have the same characteristics: speed, voltage, latency, density. 

If you could give us the part number of the original memory we could halp make sure you would be getting a matching module.

There's a label on the memory module. You must have seen it when you tried to install the one that did not work.

Thanks will chk that! The manual here says single channel, does that mean there is no benefit with using 2 ram modules?

Good catch. You are right. This is not top of the line hardware and the motherboard does not support dual channel memory so 1 x 8 is as good a s 2 x 4. Of course, adding a 4 gig is going to be cheaper.

did you actually noticed satisfactiry change in the performance ?

also, please confirm what did you finally choose to go with ?

additional 4GB or 1 X 8GB RAM ?
