OMEN by HP 15-ax242nf Laptop PC

Hey guys

I have an HP 15-ax242nf, I've checked before buying it, and it thought I saw its ram limit is 32gb

and now I can't seem that information anywhere and when I looked it up it showed that it limits at 16gb which I currently have.

The motherboard shows that it supports up to 32gb, but the laptop says it only supports 16gb, which one is correct ?

Thanks in advance!

@bochl7a,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Let's check your laptop's maximum RAM capacity:

Type in cmd in your Windows search bar, right-click on the Command Prompt App, then left-click on Run as administrator, and Yes if permission is requested.

Then copy/paste enter this command:

wmic memphysical get maxcapacity

If the number that is generated is 33554432, then your laptop can be fitted with 2 x 16GB RAM. If it says 16777216 (which, unfortunately, I think it will say), then your max RAM capacity is 2 x 8GB of DDR4 PC4-19200, 2400 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, SODIMM, 260-pin DUAL RANK 2Rx8 RAM sticks.

For best RAM speed and performance, I would strongly recommend buying a 2 x 8GB of dual rank (2Rx8) RAM kit, such as: https://www.amazon.com/Tech-PC4-19200-Notebook-Computer-AT8G2D4S2400ND8N12V/dp/B07KGMPT59?th=1.

This is a US purchase link of course; you'll have to do some research to find an eCommerce site closer to home.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Yes i did the cmd command and it showed : MaxCapacity 33554432

Does this mean that im 100% sure because i will have two 16gb kits which are pretty expensive in my country, and i had to make sure that they will work

@bochl7a,

It would be very unusual indeed if 2 x 16GB RAM wasn't compatible even though the cmd command showed otherwise.

I am a bit conflicted, because on the other hand, every online source available to me (HP, Crucial, Kingston, Samsung, etc.) all claim that 2 x 8GB is the maximum RAM capability for your laptop.

Let's call in the big guns.

@Paul_Tikkanen@Huffer, what doest thou have to say about this issue?  The basic question is this: should @bochl7a go ahead and purchase 2 x 16GB or play it safe, and go for 2 x 8GB of RAM?

Hi:

Normally, notebooks with the Intel processors that end in 'HQ' will support 32 GB of memory.

The Crucial memory report for this model has indicates the PC supports 2 x 16 GB of memory and this model has the older Skylake 'HQ' processor.

HP - Compaq HP OMEN 15-ax010tx | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

This discussion shows that a person installed 2 x 16 GB of memory in another model Omen 15-ax:

What brand and specification memory did you purchase?

Do you have a link?

Could be the timing specs were not compatible.

Made my day being called a "Big Gun" in the same breath as @Paul_Tikkanen . Thanks @NonSequitur777  Of course Paul's answer is spot on and perfectly timely.

@Paul_Tikkanen,

Thank you for your response -just for clarification's sake, the Crucial link I looked at specific for an HP Omen 15-ax242nf: HP - Compaq HP OMEN 15-ax242nf | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com, specified 16GB as the maximum RAM allowed, hence my question.

You're very welcome.

Some of the Crucial memory reports for the model series indicates that the memory is not removable at all.
