Does anybody know how many slots this PC has? And the maximum RAM that can be fitted? It is an AMD machine and currently has 4GB RAM - if the answer is 16 GB max and there are two slots, is it OK to buy 8GB to work with the original 4GB, making 12GB in total?
Also, is there a dissasembly instruction or video I can look at?

Hi:
Notebooks with the A6 processors have one memory slot, so you would have to remove the 4 GB chip and replace it with an 8 GB chip.
Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the memory removal and replacement procedure.
Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP 17 Laptop PC
This would be a compatible 8 GB memory chip for your notebook.

I am a bit confused now. On page 12 of the manual it says that the Ryzen, A9/A6 processors all have two memory slots. Am i reading this incorrectly? However it also says that the A6 only has one slot further down!

You're very welcome.
My understanding is there is only one memory slot.
One memory module slot (E2/A6 processors)
DDR4-2400 dual channel support
Supports up to 8 GB of system RAM
The manual is wrong someplace, so you have nothing to lose by buying the 8 GB chip, and if there is an empty slot, you can add it to the 4 GB chip and have 12 GB.
You may also want to look into replacing the slowpoke 5,400 RPM mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).
Your notebook may even have a M.2 slot where you can add a M.2 SATA SSD and use that for the boot drive.
