HP Pavilion Laptop PC 14-dv0000 (46P36AV)

I would like to upgrade the RAM in my computer. Currently, I have 8 GB installed. Could you please check my device model and confirm whether it has an additional slot so that I can add another 8 GB RAM?

RAM Upgrade Instructions for Your HP Pavilion Laptop

Your HP Pavilion 14-dv0000 laptop has two RAM slots and supports a maximum of 16 GB (2x8GB) of DDR4-3200 memory.

Before you purchase new RAM, please follow these steps to check your current setup and, most importantly, verify that the second slot is functioning.

Step 1: Check Your Current RAM Configuration (Software Check)

This tells you how your RAM is currently set up.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open the Task Manager.

  2. Click on the "Performance" tab.

  3. Select "Memory".

  4. Look at the bottom-right corner for "Slots used:".

    • If it says "1 of 2", you have one slot free for an upgrade.

    • If it says "2 of 2", both slots are already in use, and you would need to replace both sticks to upgrade.

Step 2: CRUCIAL - Physically Test the Empty RAM Slot

If Step 1 showed "1 of 2" slots used, it is highly recommended to test the empty slot before buying new RAM.

  1. Power Down: Shut down the laptop completely and unplug the power adapter.

  2. Discharge & Open: Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge any residual electricity. Then, carefully open the bottom panel of the laptop. (You may need a small Phillips screwdriver).

  3. Locate RAM: Find the two RAM slots on the motherboard.

  4. Test the Slot:

    • Gently remove the existing working RAM stick from its slot.

    • Carefully insert this known-working RAM stick into the empty slot you plan to use.

  5. Reassemble & Test: Reattach the bottom panel (you can test it without fully screwing it back on). Plug in the power and turn on the laptop.

  6. Check Result:

    • If the laptop boots normally: The empty slot is working perfectly. You can proceed to purchase a new, compatible RAM stick.

    • If the laptop does not boot (black screen, beeps, or error lights): The empty slot may be faulty. In this case, upgrading RAM may not work, and you should contact HP support for service.

Step 3: Purchase the Correct RAM

Once you have confirmed the slot works, purchase the correct RAM:

  • Type: DDR4

  • Speed: 3200 MHz (also labeled as PC4-25600)

  • Form Factor: 260-pin SO-DIMM

  • Capacity: Based on your needs (e.g., an 8GB stick to add to your existing one).

Pro Tip: For the best compatibility, try to match the brand, timings, and speed of your existing RAM stick. If that's not possible, buying a brand-new 2x8GB kit is the most reliable option.

By following these steps, especially the physical test in Step 2, you can confidently purchase your new RAM and avoid potential issues.
