Pavilion 15-cs1006na

Hi, I'm looking for a replacement laptop. I found out that I can get a pretty big discount for a student and currently keeping my eye on either HP Pavilion 15-cs1004na (https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=4XJ85EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB) and HP Pavilion 15-cs1006na (https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=4XH64EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB).

The problem is I'm not satisfied with the RAM and SSD size. I don't mind changing them myself but the problem is, I don't know whether the RAM is upgradeable. I already read the manual (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06248419) but it is too generic.

Question 1:

According to the manual, the RAM is non-user upgradeable but they can accept a dual channel memory. Is that mean the RAM is soldered or changing it will void the warranty? If it's about the warranty, I will deal with it later. But if it is soldered and I can't add/remove any RAM sticks then I can't do anything.

I found a review for the same chassis but with different CPU (using AMD IIRC) and even though they said it's hard to open the back case, we can find two RAM slots and two storage slots. But, I can't find any specific review/teardown for this device.

Question 2:

I know that device not equipped with HDD will need to purchase the SATA cable and adapter. Is that mean as long as I provide both the cable and the adapter I can use SATA devices?

Thank you for the answer!

Answer 1: Machine has 2 slots of RAM and suports 32GB (2 x 16GB) of RAM max.  non-user upgradeable means this work is for HP authorized service providers only. You can do but when things went wrong due to the upgrade HP would not honour warranty. The following RAM products are compatible

         https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/pavilion-15-cs1006na

Just FYI: for older machines, I could change RAM just around 3 to 5 mins. But now, this can be few hours to open the case. It is doable but very hard and easy to break without right tools.

>>>> I can't find any specific review/teardown for this device.

Each series can have 1,000 of different models/products. In this case, from 0000 to 9999 and few more characters from aa to zz. People can't review EACH single model.

Answer 2: Yes, you have to buy 2 parts

  •    The hard drive brackets are available using spare part number L19469-001.
  •    The hard drive cable is available using spare part number L23889-001

and 2.5" HDD or SSD. You can use this second storage drive to store your data/files.

Regards.

@Banhien

Thank you very much for your detailed answer! I don't believe it myself, the community actually helped me much more compared to the Service Centre. I actually asked the same questions and their answer basically is, "No, you can't do it," and they are not giving me any other options.

Answer 1:

Thanks for the explanation! I understand it very well.

Thanks for the tips! You're right, I can do it on my 2013 laptop for 10 mins, tops.

That makes sense.

Answer 2:

Thanks for the confirmation. I will mark your answer as 'Accept as Solution'. Once again, thank you very much!

I want to ask one more question then:

Do you know where is the HP authorized service providers in the UK, especially around the North East?
