HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec0001ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello.

I have a HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec0001ca with 8 GB of RAM (Samsung M471A1K43CB1-CTD DDR4-2666 / PC4-21300 DDR4 SDRAM SO-DIMM).

Can I upgrade my laptop with a other RAM of 16GB therefore 24 GB (8GB on slot 1 and 16GB on slot 2)?

This combination is possible and the memories are works together without problems?

Model of new memory is: Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266.

Thanks!!

Hi:

Yes, you can do that, but you don't want to leave it that way.

When a memory slot is empty, or you install memory such as you propose (mismatched capacities), the memory runs in the lower performing single data rate (SDR) mode.

When you install memory in both slots of matched capacities (2 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB), the memory runs in the higher performing dual data rate (DDR) mode.

I wouldn't even try that combination. I suggest doing it only with identical modules that have matching storage capacities and that are guaranteed to be compatible.

If you mix modules of differing capacities, your notebook may not even display or boot to Windows or BIOS.

Hi, @erico

...Then please explain to me why HP sells notebooks with mismatched memory configurations.

I have never experienced with a notebook PC with two memory slots, mismatched capacity memory not working.

In desktop PC's, I 100% agree with you, but not in notebooks.

@Paul_Tikkanen

I have experienced notebook PC with two memory slots, mismatched capacity or manufacturer upgrading memory not working. Many members frequently buy modules that have different manufacturers and differing capacities. They come to the forum and ask  why the configuration of original memory and new memory does not work. I have been working with threads like that here in the forum for years.

HP has QA labs and lots of binned memory modules to test their optional memory module configurations with.

HP's deep pockets give them an ability to test the config that most of the rest of us do not have. That gives the company the confidence to sell notebooks with mis-matched memory module capacity.

I prefer not to waste my time or the member's time, so I always recommend guaranteed compatible  identical modules. It is a time saver.
