HP ENVY X360 15m-cn0012dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I upgraded my RAM from (2400mhz, 8gb x 1 + 4gb x 1) configuration to 2600mhz, 8gb x 2 configuration, so total 16gb now.

The problem now is it does not detect my RAM as 2600mhz and runs it underclock at 2400mhz.

The reason i upgraded ram was not because of the Memory but Speed aswell. I read it here that it can support with 2666 aswell. What could be the issue?

Hi:

Your notebook's Intel® Core™ i7-8550U processor can only run the memory at a max speed of 2400 MHz, so it is completely normal for any memory faster than 2400 MHz to bridge to 2400 MHz.

You can install 2666MHz or 3200MHz RAM but machine will automatically downgrade to 2400MHz.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for getting back.

I thought RAM speed is independent and not controlled by Processor. Could've saved me the upgrade.

No worries and thank you so much. 🙂

You're very welcome.

The memory can only run as fast as the processor will allow.

In some cases, the chipset controls the memory speed, but only slower, not faster.

For example, I have a business desktop PC that has a 1333 MHz FSB processor (Intel E8300), but the memory will only run at a max of 800 MHz, which was the Intel series 3 chipset limitation with DDR2 memory.
