Hi,

I'm troubleshooting freezing issues with this model laptop and I want to replace 2 x 8GB with 1 x 16GB. Does it matter if it's fitted in the left or right slot?

Thanks.

Hi:

It shouldn't matter, but 2 x 8 GB runs better than 1 x 16 GB because 2 x 8 GB memory runs in dual channel mode and 1 x 16 GB will only run in single channel mode.

So, you will be making a bad situation worse.

I would just remove one of the 8 GB chips and install a 16 GB chip in its place and if increasing the memory to 24 GB helps any, remove the other 8 GB chip and replace that one with a 16 GB chip so you have 32 GB of memory running in dual channel mode again.

Below is the link to the service manual.

That's usually the case but for some reason, the user manual for this model doesn't list 2 x 8GB as being approved. I'm wondering is there something peculiar about this model where the normal maxim doesn't apply?

I think HP just left out that configuration from the list.

They say 2 x 4 GB is supported, and 2 x 16 GB is supported, so it would make no sense that 2 x 8 GB wouldn't be supported as well.

Not to mention, HP would be shooting themselves in the foot by installing memory in a configuration that isn't supported.
