HP Laptop PC 15-dw3000 (1A3Y1AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am currently using an HP 15-dw3047nr laptop equipped with an i7-1165G7 processor and Kingston DDR4 RAM operating at 2666 MHz. I am considering upgrading to 64 GB of RAM and have been contemplating the purchase of Kingston DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz.

Upon conducting some research online, I discovered that my processor can support a frequency of 3200 MHz. However, I have been unable to find any information regarding whether my motherboard (HP 881D) can support this frequency as well.

Moreover, I have read that in some instances, RAM with a higher frequency can lead to instability in the laptop’s operation. Interestingly, the DDR4 3200 MHz RAM is cheaper for some reason.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on this matter?

Hi:

The only information I can offer would be that for some reason HP has restricted the speed of the memory in that model series because as you indicated, the processor can support memory running at 3200 MHz.

However, the HP product specs indicate that the notebook came with DDR4-2666 MHz memory, and I am almost 100% certain if the motherboard supported the 3200 MHz speed, the notebook would have been equipped with DDR4-3200 MHz memory chips.

I would use DDR4-32000 MHz memory chips to upgrade to 32 GB or 64 GB.

They will automatically bridge to 2666 MHz and maybe you will be pleasantly surprised that they will run at 3200 MHz, but the odds are against that.

Unfortunately, HP only provides the service manual for the 15-dw0xxx model series, so that would not be of any help to find additional information, but it should be of help to you for taking the notebook apart to upgrade the memory.

The Crucial memory report indicates that your notebook can support 2 x 32 GB of memory.

You may want to run this command to see what Windows indicates:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

So it remains uncertain whether the speed will increase to 3200MHz. I appreciate your response.

Anytime.

Yes, it remains uncertain until you install DDR4-3200 MHz memory chips to see the result, but don't get your hopes up.
