Wanted to upgrade my RAM on my HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx0171ur but I don't really know what characteristics I need to look at. Can anyone help me with this question?

Your notebook can support up to 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-2666 CL19 or DDR4-3200 CL22 memory.
The DDR4-3200 memory will automatically bridge to 2666 MHz because that is as fast as your notebook's processor can run the memory at.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the memory removal and replacement procedure.
Chapter 1 of the manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB but the notebooks with the Intel 'H' series processors can support 2 x 16 GB of memory.
You can run this command to confirm that:
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
