Hi, I have a laptop 8540w(i7 6xxx) with OS of windows 7 64bit.
What is the best way to upgrade the laptop's RAM?
I have changed the RAM on the back of the laptop with 2 different RAMs
1. 8 gb kingston RAM DDR3
BIOS found it with another 2gb RAM
The system was stuck at the "WINDOWS" with NO windows sign(the four block one)
2. 4 gb ??? RAM DDR3
BIOS also found it with another 2gb RAM
The system was also stuck, HOWEVER, a red dot(I guess it is the red dot of the windows sign) appears before it got stuck.
I dont have more RAMs for laptops and I dont know how to upgrade it(so i havent buy any).
Could you tell me what happed to the previous problems and how to upgrade my laptop's RAM?

The best paractice for upgrading the memory is to purchase guaranteed compatible memory in a pair and replace the original modules with the upgrade modules you purchased. That way you will avoid the frustration caused by the issue you are experiencing. The upgrade will work as expected the first time.
An alternative method is to source a module that is identical in all respects to the original module if you have a single module installed. Mixing modules as you did frequently give the result you experienced.
Perform a search with the search engine of your choice and use Elitebook 8540w memory upgrade as the key words.
