Hi

Can I use a higher frequency RAM such as a 1600MHz instead of the stock 800MHz?

Regards

Hi:

Your notebook does use DDR3L-1600 memory.

The reason it is running in single channel mode (800 MHz) is because according to the specs, it comes with a 4GB DDR3L-1600 memory module and a 2GB DDR3L-1600 memory module.

Star Wars™ Special Edition Notebook - 15-an000ni (ENERGY STAR) Product Specifications | HP® Customer...

In order for the memory to run in the higher performing dual channel mode, the memory has to be installed in matched pairs (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 8 GB).

Below is the link to the service manual.  The memory upgrade info can be found in chapter 1.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification.

If only HP shipped it with 8GB instead of 6GB....

You're very welcome.

I agree.

What HP did makes no sense.

They should have installed 1 x 8 GB and left the other slot empty and you could have maxed out the memory just by adding a second 8 GB chip.
