the notebook fan died and i have a new one to replace it. how do i get to the fan bay, do i approach from the battery bottom or do i go thru the top behind the keyboard

Come in from the bottom:
See p. 85 and a lot of procedures leading up to it. You have one of the more intricate and involved laptop disassembly projects there on your hands. Good news is you don't need to remove the motherboard but I would remove and clean the heatsink and apply new thermal compound on top of the cpu while you are in there.
