Ram UPGRADE HP Pavilion

Hello guys,

I recently found out that my notebook has 1 extra slot of RAM. I want to upgrade it, but it kinda confusing. I can't find anywhere if the actual RAM card is dual channel or not (if it is, i only want extra 8GB. i don't want to buy a 16gb ram card). Second, in the notebooks specs it says that it is 2400mhz, but when i check it in task manager, it says 2666mhz. Can you guys give me some details of what should i do to make a smart choice?

There are indeed 2 slots. The laptop uses DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM but it "bridges" meaning downclocks to 2400 speed. So when you look at the modules actually installed they are 2666 modules. And if you install a matched pair or a pair with the same specs and size (gigs) you get dual channel operation. So your thinking is right: get a second 8 gig module of DDR4-2666 but get regular factory type memory not any gaming or HyperX or stuff like that. Crucial, Hynix, Samsung, etc.

I have the same question. 

I am perplexed, however, that you say adding another 8Gb of RAM is possible and yet the manual that you have linked (thank you) gives a max RAM spec of 8Gb :

Two SODIMM slots - customer non-accessible/non-upgradeable
DDR4-2400 Dual Channel Support (DDR4-2666 bridge to DDR4-2400)
Supports up to 8 GB max system memory
4 GB (4 GB × 1)
6 GB (2 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
8 GB (8 GB × 1)

It is a shame if this limit is correct as I could do with the extra RAM.

The Manual is in error. HP issues more models of laptop than probably the rest of the industry combined and these Manuals get put out there with little editing sometimes.

is it ok? I see that there are 2 of 2666mhz. I wanted to buy only one, to work with the one i have already, but i don't think it will match.

One would match what you have but this pair would work. Crucial is made to pair with original equipment memory. Don't spend more than you must.

New RAM stick installed over the weekend.  All fully working and 16Gb of RAM now operational.

Thanks for your help and your reassurance that the manual is wrong.
