Pavilion 15-ab029tx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I want to upgrade my ram module. I need to know the EXACT memory module config that this laptop's motherboard supports.

Steps that I've followed so far-

1. I put in the new 8gb module with the 4gb which came in the box. bios reads only 4gb but CPU-Z shows 12gb installed.

2. I swapped slots and checked for bent pins, there weren't any.

3. On the single 8gb module, the laptop doesn't start and LED for power and caps lock button keep beeping(which means that the laptop doesn't detect the ram).

4. I checked the ram modules. Their configs are

    a. 4gb that came installed with the laptop - 4gb 1rx8(rank 1) PC3L (1.35V)

    b. 8gb new one - 8gb 2rx8 (rank 2) PC3 (1.5V)

There are two possible options for me that I know uptill now -

1. Hack/Mod the BIOS so that the ram channel operation voltage could be changed.

2. Wait for HP to release a BIOS version that could automatically make this work.

3. Buy a new ram module.

As for me, first option doesn't exist, second is up to the people at HP. So the third one is the only remaining option for now. Hence I need a troubleshooting/exact configuration on the ram that this system supports as I could not find the information in the product specification document. Please do specify the operating frequency (1333Mhz/1600Mhz) acceptable.

I'd really appreciate a fast reply.

Please and thank you.

Hi,

On page #2 of the manual:

MemoryTwo SODIMM slots - NON customer accessible / upgradeable
DDR3L-1600 Dual Channel Support
Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following configurations:
16384-MB total system memory (8192×2)
12288-MB total system memory (8192×1) + (4096×1)
8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2)
6144-MB total system memory (4096×1) + (2048×1)
4096-MB total system memory (4096×1) or (2048×2)

1. The 8GB stick is not compatible with your machine.

2. Tab SPD of CPU-Z shows you RAM specs including brand, please use same specs and same company.

3. Buy a new RAM module using information from #2

Regards.

Does the rank of ram matter? or is it just the voltage which i should take care of?
