Hp 250 G4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I wanted to upgrade my laptop RAM (because of the integrated graphic card using it) so i bought a 4 GB 1600 MHz RAM and i installed it. Once i booted the pc it says that 4 GB are installed (but i have 4 GB in each slot) and not only that, when i open Task Manager on Windows it says that i have 2.4 GB of ram which i don't think it's possible. I already tried to see if both ram work (i installed them individually without the other RAM), and i also tried to set the max memory in msconfig (as many forums suggested). I also thought that was a bug of Windows but with a linux distro on live CD it recognizes also 4 GB. Can anyone help me?

Hi:

Did you test the memory individually in each slot?

From what you wrote, it sounds like the previously empty slot is bad.

2.4 GB of available memory out of 4GB with the onboard Intel graphics is not unreasonable.

When you do the MSConfig thing, make sure that maximum memory setting is unchecked.

Yes, like i already said, i tested them individually and they both work.

The integrated graphics usually take 128 MB of RAM in my case (Intel HD 5500) so i don't think it's this the problem.

In the msconfig i think i've done it right but i'll redo it.

Ok i've opened msconfig and i unchecked max memory and it worked but still it doesn't recognize all the 8 GB, just 4 GB.

I've installed Cpu-z and it seems to recognize both slots but Windows just doesn't.

4 GB out of 8GB is low.

You are forgetting though, that more than 128 MB of system memory goes to the graphics.

A considerable amount goes to the shared system memory-- as much as 2 GB.

As i already said my Integrated graphics take 128 MB from system memory (and for sure not 4 GB) when it doesn't require more.

I was on the desktop with nothing open so i think this is the case when my intel hd 5500 takes 128 MB of RAM (as it is shown in the Task Manager writing that 3,9 GB of RAM is recognized and 128 MB goes to the Integrated Graphics.

In any case the problem is not the Graphic card so i think that there is another problem but i don't know what it is.
