I would like to upgrade the ram on my laptop, the problem is that one of the slots seems to be damaged.

I had 8GB 2x4GB, but I'm working now with only 4. And as expected it's too slow. I'm thinking of buying a 16GB memory but I'm not sure if it will work properly.

I would like to know if it is a good idea to buy the 16GB for a single slot.

Hi:

Your notebook should be able to support 2 x 16 GB of memory if both slots were working.

HP does not have an up-to-date service manual for the 15-dy2000 model series.

The one they have covers the older 15-dy0000 model series.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP 15 Laptop PC

Chapter 1 of that manual indicates the max memory for the models with the 8th gen core processors was 2 x 8 GB.

To see if you can install a single 16 GB memory chip in the working slot, you can run this command:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

If the report indicates 33,xxx,xxx then you can install 1 x 16 GB of memory.
