HP Pavilion x360 14 Convertible PC 14-dy0000 (300N1AV)

Hello!

I hope you can help me to understand what happens and what I should do on my laptop .

Apparently and completely randomly my laptop shuts down when I insert in USB-A port an external SSD via a SATA USB 3 or 3.1 adapters.

I have used two different adapters (1 USB 3 and 1 USB 3.1) that seem to give the same random result with the laptop shutdown.

If upon insertion to USB-A of the SATA USB adapter and SSD the pc does not shut down everything can work normally including access to the external SSD, etc.

The pc not shut down never conncting on USB-C the SATA USB adapter and SSD, everything can work normally including access to the external SSD, etc.

I connected and used an external USB 3.0 DVD burner to the USB-A port and the laptop never shuts down, everything works normally.

The two different SATA USB adapters and the same SSD work regularly if connected on USB-A port on other laptop and desktop pc.

I honestly did not understand whether it is a fault, a hardaware or software problem related or current limitation to USB-A ports.

Commets, questions, suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Hi @Francesco_65

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your pc shuts down when connected USB device, I am glad to assist you.

This seems to be an issue with the Motherboard. Please contact our Phone Support for Service Options.

Ciao Raj2111,

thanks for suggestion!

Yes, it is my intention to contact Phone Support for Service Options tomorrow.

Yes, you may be right about the main board although it is not clear why the problem occurs, randomly, only with the adapters SATA and not with a divice DVD burner for instance.

Connecting the same SATA adapters to USB type C on laptop all work fine and I can use the same external SSD device also.

So I ask you if you can provide me detales and specifications (current limitation, protections, impedence, recomendations, etc.) about USB ports for my laptop.

Thansk again for any your help.

Francesco

Dear Raj2111

I forgot to specify that the USB 3.0 port electrically energizes the DVD burner device directly, and the laptop motherboard itself works normally (DVD burner device not allow external power supply but only from the USB itself).

...that's why I asked if there are any requirements to be rispted for peripherals to connect to USB 3 ports.

More info are very appreciated!

Regards.

Francesco

I did some additional tests such as using cables with USB 3 type c male-male connectors and USB 3 type A to USB 3 type C adapters and vice versa.
By using these types of cables and adapters USB 3 the problem of sudden shutdown disappeared.
It still remains to be understood why SATA to USB type A cables and adapters on other PC to laptop devices do not give problems instead on this HP laptop they cause an immediate shutdown.
Question, is there a possibility that the USB A ports on my HP laptop have a control of power draw (many restrictive) or spurious check or extra current check, or interference, etc.?

Any suggestions and information is welcomed.

Thanks!

Hi @Francesco_65,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There are several potential reasons why your HP PC may be experiencing random shutdowns when you insert an external SSD into one of its USB ports. Here are some possible causes and solutions.

  • Power supply issue: If your computer's power supply is not providing enough power to support the external SSD, the computer may shut down unexpectedly. Try using a different power supply or disconnecting other power-consuming devices while using the external SSD.
  • Overheating: The additional load placed on the system by the external SSD may be causing the computer to overheat, leading to unexpected shutdowns. Ensure that your computer is properly ventilated and that its cooling system is functioning correctly.
  • USB port issue: If the USB port into which you are inserting the external SSD is damaged or malfunctioning, it could cause the computer to shut down unexpectedly. Try using a different USB port or testing the port with another device to confirm that it is functioning properly.
  • Driver or software issue: The computer's drivers or software may not be properly configured to handle the external SSD, leading to unexpected shutdowns. Make sure that you have the latest drivers and software installed for both the computer and the external SSD.
  • Hardware compatibility issue: The external SSD may not be compatible with your computer's hardware, leading to unexpected shutdowns. Check the manufacturer's documentation for the external SSD to ensure that it is compatible with your computer's hardware and operating system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Dear Alden4,

thansk for your email, and for kindly support!

First I would specify that the random shutdown accured also without SDD installed i.e. immeditelly to insertion with the adapter SATA USB 3 only.

Here I could exlude all or some possible causes proposed by you.

Power supply issue: I used only one device, not other device connevted in the same time, and the adapter SATA USB 3 and the SSD draws inrush current of 200mA and 20mA at rest.

Overheating: I tend to exclude an overload and overheating also because the measured currents are low and the problem occurred even with laptop just turned on.

USB port issue: I tend to rule out that the USB port is damaged or malfunctioning because other devices do not cause random shutdowns. For example, I have connected a DVD burner (powered by the same port) to the same USB port that draws an inrush current of 260mA (insted 200 mA for the SATA adapet) but did not cause any problems.

Driver or software issue: See my first specification (no SDD installed in the SATA adapter).

Hardware compatibility issue: See my first specification (no SDD installed in the SATA adapter).

Here my questionS:

1 - By specifications I can see only the info "2 USB SuperSpeed Type-A con velocità di trasmissione di 5 Gbps", but no other info about USB 2.x or USB 3.x and maximum power/corrent provided.

Can you provide the specification detailed for the USB Ports on my laptop?

2 - Could impedance mismatch problems occur between USB ports and connected devices?

3 - Could SATA USB 3.0 adapters generate spurious and inteference so as to shutdown laptop power?

Thanks for your help.

I have been in contact with HP technical support for several days and the only thing they have asked me to do is to reinstall some patches, listed here below.

But before to do this massive update I asked to the HP technical support more details about the USB ports.

At moment I know only this: 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate.

I don't know why HP support persists in not giving me more information on the maximum current that can be supplied by the USB ports from a hardware point of view.

It seems that I am asking for something that is unknown even to HP or that is taboo even to them.

Can anyone help me with more details?

Thanks!

Francesco
