Has anyone managed to find a satisfactory resolution to this? Same thing has happened to mine 18 months in - never dropped, just sits on my desk and gets opened and closed once a day. I bought the same computer for my dad and it happened to his after 9 months, so it's 2 for 2 from HP.

I clamped mine back together with a binder clip and some foam padding for the display glass side. It's a thin 3cm clip so it doesn't impact the ability to fold the display out or into tablet mode. It has held for months without further issue or damage.

 

Got tired of waiting on HP to offer a solution that didn't cost me hundreds of dollars, since this hinge failure occurred in my 13th month of owning the device...
