Just a confirmation of a tip that I read elsewhere; the type of SSD matters for BIOS recognition:  I was struggling with an Intel SSD (which booted fine from a USB converter, but not in the internal SATA bay)...  Somewhere a kind soul suggested that it could be the manufacturer of the drives' subtle differences.  As such, I cloned to a Kingston SSD versus the Intel, after considering a BIOS upgrade - and opting not to - as I was only one rev behind - - VOILA; it boots.

So before burning hours on experiments, see if you have a couple of brands to try - you may get lucky as others of us have.
