HP Pavilion 17t-ab000 CTO (ENERGY STAR)

Using the recovery disc I made back when this laptop was new, fails to complete.  I have changed the hard drive from a 128 GB SATA to 1 TB PCIe.  The mother board does support this but I am unsure if this is what would be causing the installation to fail.  It does place all the files on the new drive but I am just no boot wizard that can figure out what the issue is.  I have placed the error below for information.  If anyone would have some guidance I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks!

Hi @Crasht,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Product. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Here’s a breakdown of the errors and some potential solutions:

1. Error with DiskPart and Creating ESP/MSR:

  • The error code [-2147024809] is related to a DiskPart failure when attempting to create the EFI System Partition (ESP) and the Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR). These partitions are required for UEFI booting, which is necessary for modern systems with a UEFI BIOS.

2. Issue with Assigning Drive Letter to ESP:

  • The ESP partition should be created during the setup process, and it seems there's an issue when the system attempts to assign a letter to it.

3. WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) Offset and Pushback Failure:

  • The WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) partition, which is needed for system recovery, is also failing to be created or configured properly.

Potential Causes and Solutions:

A. Mismatch Between Legacy BIOS and UEFI Boot Modes

Since you're replacing the original SATA hard drive with a PCIe NVMe drive, it’s possible that the system is trying to use Legacy BIOS boot mode instead of UEFI. UEFI is required for PCIe drives and the creation of ESP partitions.

Solution:

  1. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
    • Reboot the laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing ESC or F10 during boot).
    • Ensure UEFI boot mode is enabled and not Legacy BIOS or CSM (Compatibility Support Module) mode.
    • If it's set to Legacy BIOS, change it to UEFI.
    • Save and exit BIOS.
  2. Recreate the Recovery Partition (ESP/MSR):
    • Once you’ve switched to UEFI mode in BIOS, the system should be able to correctly create the ESP partition.
    • If necessary, you can use DiskPart manually to format and partition the disk correctly.

B. Partition Issues:

The disk needs to have the correct partitions (ESP, MSR, and Windows partitions) for Windows to install and boot properly.

Solution:

  1. Use DiskPart to Format the Drive:
    • Boot your computer with a Windows installation USB or recovery media.
    • Open Command Prompt (Shift + F10) from the recovery options.
    • Use DiskPart to clean and partition the new PCIe SSD:

C. Missing or Corrupt Recovery Files

The error messages related to the PushbackBP.cmd and Pin.BP.SIZE suggest that the recovery partition files might be corrupt or incomplete. If you’re using a recovery disc you made, it’s possible that some of the recovery files are missing or didn’t get copied correctly.

Solution:

  • If you have a Windows 10 installation USB, you might want to try a clean install using the USB instead of the recovery disc.
  • During the installation, select the custom installation option and point it to the partition you created earlier (drive C:). This will install Windows fresh, and you can later reinstall any necessary drivers or software.

D. Drive is Not Recognized or Partitions Misconfigured

The error about failing to assign a drive letter to the ESP partition might also indicate an issue with how the drive is being recognized by the system.

Solution:

  1. Update BIOS/UEFI: Ensure your BIOS is up to date. Manufacturers occasionally release BIOS updates to improve compatibility with new hardware like PCIe SSDs.
  2. Reformat the SSD with the correct partitions as mentioned above, ensuring GPT partition style for UEFI mode.

Step-by-Step to Fix:

  1. Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup and ensure UEFI boot mode is enabled (disable Legacy BIOS).
  2. Reboot into Windows Installation Media and run DiskPart to clean and partition the SSD.
  3. Restart the Installation and use the newly created partitions for the installation.

Optional: Recreate Recovery Media

If you’re still encountering issues with the recovery disc, you can recreate the recovery media using a Windows 10 USB installer:

  • Use the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB stick with the latest version of Windows 10.
  • This can replace the recovery media and avoid potential corruption with the old discs.
