Rarely been used, and issue has popped up, since day one.  Every several weeks, I receive a message "Battery requires calibration"?  Why?  It's a [pain in the ass, to go through the long BIOS process to perform a full re-calibration.....and then the message returns.

Hi @erniek70

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your laptop is displaying the "Battery Requires Calibration" message regularly, and it's been a persistent issue since day one. This can definitely be frustrating, especially if you have to go through the BIOS re-calibration process repeatedly. Let's try to break down the issue and see if we can find a solution that makes this less of a hassle.

Why Does This Happen?

The "Battery Requires Calibration" message typically appears when the battery's charge level indicator gets out of sync with the actual charge level. It can occur because:

  • Infrequent use: If the battery is not used regularly, it can cause the system to lose track of its true capacity, triggering the calibration message.
  • Battery wear: If your battery has already gone through multiple charge cycles, it may be having trouble reporting its true charge level.
  • Software/BIOS issues: Sometimes, bugs or outdated BIOS versions can cause inaccurate battery readings, resulting in frequent calibration prompts.

Possible Solutions

Here are a few ways to address the issue:

1. Perform a Full Battery Calibration

  • Even though it's a bit of a pain, doing a full battery calibration might help reset the charge indicator. While it’s inconvenient to do frequently, you could try to do it once every few months rather than every time the message pops up. You can usually do it through your BIOS or your system’s battery management software.

2. Update BIOS and Battery Drivers

  • Sometimes, the issue arises because of outdated BIOS firmware or battery drivers. Check to see if there’s an update available for your BIOS and battery drivers:
    • BIOS Update: Go to your laptop’s support page on the HP website and check for any BIOS updates.
    • Battery Drivers: Update the battery drivers via Device Manager on Windows. Under the Batteries section, right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and choose Update Driver.
