Good morning. My laptop is overheating like crazy on one side. Half the screen flickers green every so often. I'm convinced, as is my Geek Squad tech, one of the fans has stopped working. As this laptop is only 3 months old, I'd  appreciate if HP could reimburse me the cost of the fan. Unfortunately, I can't find any way of contacting HP to get them to help. Is there a customer support number I can call? The only one I could find wants me to spend 100 dollars for a phone call to cover what is essentially a 20 dollar part. The automated tool is remarkably unhelpful. I'm using an HP Omnibook X laptop. Thank you. I'd ask Best Buy to cover the cost of the fan, as I bought the computer there, but Best Buy doesn't sell laptop fans.

Hi @sarkan84,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the flickering screen and fan issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Before concluding it's a hardware failure, let's try a few steps:

Screen Flickering

Screen flickering can sometimes be caused by software issues or faulty internal connections. To troubleshoot this:

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date, as outdated drivers can cause display issues. You can update them from the HP Support website or through your device manager.

Adjust Refresh Rate:

  • Navigate to your display settings and try adjusting the refresh rate, as incorrect configuration might lead to flickering.

Fan Concerns

If a fan has indeed stopped working, it could lead to overheating, which might indirectly affect the display. Here’s how you can address fan issues:

Check Fan Operation:

  • You can typically hear or feel air movement when fans are operating. If you're unsure, a technician might be able to diagnose it further by opening the laptop and checking for physical blockages or malfunctions.

Clean the Vents:

  • Ensure that the cooling vents are clean and unblocked to allow proper air movement. Dust accumulation can hinder fan functionality.

I hope this helps.

Geek Squad did all of this the first time I went. It did not help. The laptop is still overheating. I plugged it in ten minutes ago, and the keyboard is already warm to the touch on one side. I can physically hear the fan whirring on one side but not the other. I went ahead and downloaded a bunch of updates at your suggestion which I probably don't need and which will probably slow my computer down. It's alright. I finally found the HP customer service phone number yesterday by googling it. I don't know why HP keeps it such a closely guarded secret. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some headway by calling them. I tried looking for a laptop fan on the HP online store  yesterday, but their online store doesn't offer fans. Very frustrated.

The nearest service center is a 40 minute drive away. I hope they sell fans. I’m going to call HP tomorrow with the number I found before resigning myself to the 20-mile journey. By the way, I’m still under factory warranty. So all of this is beyond ridiculous.

They had one job. I sent my computer to the repair center with a request to fix the broken fan as the unit was overheating. Do you know what they did? Updated the BIOS and performed  "extensive testing." Whatever that means.

They did not replace the fan. The unit is currently overheating. The screen continues to flicker. A while ago, it went completely black. I reset it and restored visuals, thank God. Who knows for how long, though?

I can't afford a new computer. I need  a computer for work. I don't know what to do if this laptop melts down.
