The HP utility says that my battery is not charging properly and that I need to replace it.
1. If my laptop is always plugged in, should this make a difference?
2. where can I find out what battery I need and how to replace it?

1. If my laptop is always plugged in, should this make a difference?
The laptop should not always be plugged in. How far does it charge? To what percent?
2. where can I find out what battery I need and how to replace it?
You can purchase it on Amazon.com
Only purchase a battery with the exact HP part number

To your question: "Why is it bad to leave the laptop plugged in?", the opinions are somewhat divided, but count me in this camp, quote: "The old idea that leaving a laptop plugged in for too long will hurt it is simply not the case."
Link: Keeping Your Laptop Plugged In Is Fine | Mental Floss.
Most modern laptop batteries are either lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. Laptop batteries have a finite number of charge discharge cycles. A general misconception is that charging your battery all the time while you work or between "up"-times will harm it. No, it will not. Once a battery is charged at 100%, modern laptops will rout the incoming power directly to the power supply of the laptop bypassing the battery if in use, or it will shut off charging altogether.
Do not drain your battery to 0% or even allow your battery to drain close to 0%. That will do far more harm and will shorten the lifespan of your battery significantly.
