Looking to replace HDD on Envy 17 with SSD, mechanical hard drive is beginning to fail. Who makes an SSD that can quickly be popped in? Only space for one drive on this computer so I will have to reinstall my copy of windows, but getting the SSD upgrade done is the first priority.

Hi:

 

You can install any 2.5" SSD you want.

 

I recommend the Western Digital Blue model series which has the best performance for the price, in my opinion.

 

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

 

HP ENVY 17 Laptop PC Maintenance and Service GuideIMPORTANT! This document is intended for HP author...

 

Note that according to chapter 1 of the service manual, your notebook has a M.2 slot that supports the much faster NVMe SSD's.

 

You may want to look into one of those as an alternative...I recommend the Sansung 980 (not 980 Pro).
