My HDD is reporting as failing on bootup. It is a 512GB disk drive. Is my laptop compatible with a 1TB SSD as it's replacement? Also, is there a relatively inexpensive app and procedure that you would recommend that I can use to clone the new drive?

A 1 TB SSD drive should work. What you need is a 2.5" SATA3 SSD drive. There're many brands to choose from (see the Google link below). Some of reputable names are Western Digital (WD), Crucial and Samsung.

As to cloning software WD and Crucial let you use Acronis, and Samsung has its own tool called Samsung Data Migration. If you buy an SSD drive that doesn't come with a cloning app, you can always use Disk Genius. It's free and has a nice user-friendly interface. Personally, I used it not too long ago.

You also need a USB to 2.5" SATA SSD adapter (see the link below) to connect a new drive to for cloning.
