I want to swap out the 5400 rpm 2tb HDD with at least a 500 gb SSD. Im curious if the board also has an M.2 slot, and if not do I need a 7mm or 9.5 mm SSD for the 2.5 in. SATA slot?

Hi:
The board may or may not have a M.2 slot. If it does, it would only support SATA drives.
Some models where M.2 support is listed, only have the M.2 slot if the notebook came from HP with a M.2 drive.
If you look at chapter 3 of the service manual, there is a removable part called a SSD board (which is the M.2 slot).

So, before buying a SSD, open up the notebook, and if there is a M.2 slot, you can install a M.2 SATA SSD.
As far as the 2.5" SSD...they are all 7.0mm and fit in a notebook that has a 9.5mm or 7.0mm hard drive.
The holes line up in the same place and the 7.0mm drive will attach to the connector just fine if there is a 9.5mm drive in your notebook.
