i have an older G61-420CA laptop that I use in my boat for charting. do not really want to get a new laptop at present. My HDD is dying and I would like to replace it however most replacements are now 1TB or larger. The manual said 500GB max but it is difficult to find one that size is it possible to go to a Western Digital® 1TB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive, Laptop

Hi @Kisinana,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A very Good Day to you. 🙂 Hope you are doing well. 🙂 I understand that you need assistance regarding a hard drive. I’ll be delighted to assist you with this.:)
A commendable job was done by diagnosing the issue before posting your question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with tech-savvy d customers like you. Kudos to you for that.:)
We definitely value your relationship with HP tremendously. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.:)
Going by the original product specifications of the unit, it came with 320 GB preinstalled.

- If the user manual says that 500 GB is the maximum supported Hard drive then the motherboard supports only that much. It may not be possible to go any higher.
- Please check with local Hardware technicians at Best Buy or Staples for a 500 GB hard drive. You should be able to get hold of one.
- You could also try Amazon or eBay in this regard also. You should manage to lay hands on one hopefully. 🙂
- As the unit is older HP service options are no more available as it is not manufactured anymore.
- However, it depends on the motherboard. I do not have the product specifications of the motherboard and the maximum capacity of the hard drive that this specific motherboard supports.
- It is possible that it could support a 1 TB hard drive. That is why I referred you to contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician who could open the computer, check the motherboard and tell your right away, the maximum storage capacity supported by this motherboard.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this pans out. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂
