Your laptop can actually hold a pair of 2.5 inch wide and 7mm or 9.5 mm hard drives or SSD(s). Here is the Manual:

Yes it can take a solid state drive. One like this would work:
I once had your model series laptop and you need no cable to install a second hard drive but you do need an adapter also called a caddy or sled. .
Hard Drive Hardware Kit (not illustrated, includes bracket and screws) 480457-001
