Hello, I have a 2017 model HP Pavilion laptop running windows 10 64 bit.  My laptop is very very slow.

I'm wondering how difficult it is to replace the existing hard drive with an SSD close to the same size.  Is it worth it?  thanks in advance for your help

Here are model details:

Hi:

Yes, your notebook has a M.2 slot that supports NVMe SSD's.

See chapter 1, page 2 of the service manual for the supported drive types:

I recommend either the Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro), or the Western Digital Blue SN570.

You can also replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD if you prefer, but NVMe SSD's are faster.

Thank you so much. Can you please give some guidance how to install and move the make this as a primary Hard drive and move the Windows to this new HDD. Do I have to remove current HDD from the laptop or can I leave it. Please help

You're very welcome.

If you want to retain the 2.5" drive and use it for storage, you can.

Normally if you leave Windows on the 2.5" drive, the notebook will always want to boot from the hard drive first and not the SSD.

What I recommend if you plan on keeping the 2.5" drive would be to temporarily disconnect the drive after you clone it so the Windows boot manager automatically switches to the SSD to boot from.

Then you should be able to reconnect the drive, format it and use it for storage.

You can use cloning software to clone the operating system to the new SSD.

Maybe there are some free cloning software programs available.

Macrium Reflect used to be free but now you can only download trial software to use.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with that, since I never clone an existing drive's contents to a new drive.

I prefer clean installing Windows on a new drive and reinstalling my programs and files.

The service manual has the procedure to install a M.2 SSD.

Thank you. Can you pl give some instructions to create a boot drive on a usb (from HDD) and install it on the SSD then I will copy the data alone copy. Thanks a lot

You're very welcome.

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

You can create the recovery media now while the current hard drive is installed.

I recommend that after you install the new M.2 NVMe SSD, that you temporarily disconnect the 2.5" drive so the cloud recovery tool doesn't install the OS on the old drive and not the SSD.

If you want to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your PC's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is:  2SS18UA#ABA

You're very welcome.

If you look at chapter 4, page 31 of the service manual, it indicates what tools you need...

Tools required
You will need the following tools to complete the removal and replacement procedures:
● Flat-bladed screw driver
● Magnetic screw driver
● Phillips P0 screw driver
Service considerations
The following sections include some of the considerations that you must keep in mind during disassembly
and assembly procedures.

NOTE: As you remove each subassembly from the computer, place the subassembly (and all
accompanying screws) away from the work area to prevent damage.

Plastic parts
CAUTION: Using excessive force during disassembly and reassembly can damage plastic parts. Use care
when handling the plastic parts. Apply pressure only at the points designated in the maintenance instructions.

I recommend that you also get a set of notebook pry tools to help you separate the bottom cover after you remove the screws.

This kit even has the size Philips head screwdriver bit you need according to the manual.
